Easing your load shedding stress with #Smartcooking

The Wonderbag
I've come up with some #Smartcooking tips to ease your load shedding stress:

Get Freezing:

Freeze 2l bottles of water amongst your frozen goods in your freezer/deep freeze – these will act like giant ice blocks when the power goes off and stop your food from defrosting and going bad. (Remember not to fill the bottles to the brim as the liquid needs a little space to expand when freezing.)

Get Braaing:

This is the simplest and most obvious solution, the weather at the moment is also completely accommodating, just don’t forget to stock up on your wood and charcoal.

Get Gas:

You don’t have to re-do your whole kitchen to convert to gas: there are great options for order online as well as local stores offering portable gas hobs that you simply connect to a gas cylinder plus other very cost-effective gas options:

Get Speedy:

If Eskom actually sticks to the schedule and you need to cook in a hurry before the lights go out, you can also look at getting a pressure cooker which will help you cook your veggies, soups, stews and curries in a fraction of the time. They are widely available and can be found at the three major retailers mentioned above too!

Get Green:

For those who don’t want to go out and buy a gas cylinder or portable gas hob there’s a ‘green’ option in the form of flammable liquids and gels, similar to paraffin, but more environmentally friendly and safer to use!

Get Smart:

Ever heard of the Wonderbag?

It is an amazing ‘non-electric portable slow cooker; it continues to cook food which has been brought to the boil by conventional methods for up to 8 hours without the use of additional electricity or fuel.’ In other words, you can prep your curry/stew/bolognaise/soup/whatever tickles your fancy in the morning before work and transfer it to your Wonderbag to cook slowly throughout the day, or simply transfer it to the Wonderbag to continue cooking if the electricity goes off. It’s an invention that will save you time, energy, money and sanity. (You can boil rice on the stove for 3 minutes before popping it into the Wonderbag for 40, yielding a perfect result with no chance of burning.) You can buy them at http://www.wonderbag.co.za  and find hundreds of recipes there too.
(And, they sell for around R230 which is pretty awesome)
